Director
Osamu Dezaki
Osamu Dezaki
Born on November 18, 1943, in Tokyo.
He started working as a manga artist for rental books while still in high school, and in 1963, he joined Mushi Production. After working on the animation for 'Astro Boy,' he took on directing roles.
At the same company, he became the chief director for 'Ashita no Joe.' From 1972, he was active at Madhouse, and in 1980, he co-founded 'Annbul' with his longtime friend Akio Sugino.
From the 1990s, he has been mainly active with Tezuka Productions.
His distinctive style—frequent use of still frames called 'harmony,' use of incident and transmitted light, incredibly dark shadows like in live-action shooting, and repeatedly overlaying the same footage three or four times in editing—is well known among fans as 'Dezaki direction.'
