Synopsis
Rome, 1612. Nineteen-year-old Artemisia, an aspiring painter, must testify in court about the sexual assault she suffered. The notary conducting the inquiry doubts her, questioning why she didn't come forward sooner. In an era when it was difficult for women to pursue a profession, losing the case would mean losing her dream of becoming a painter as well. She had no choice but to fight for the truth, whatever it took. How did she overcome this crisis to become a painter in her own right?
This film retells, through richly rendered imagery, the early struggles of a young Artemisia Gentileschi, who would later become the greatest woman painter of the Baroque era.
Content Advisory: This film contains depictions of sexual violence and its aftermath, as well as works of art featuring violent imagery. Please be aware of this content before attending the screening.
